GUWAHATI: Seven people have been arrested by Lahowal police for the gruesome torture of a 62-year-old Adivasi woman at Romai Tea Estate, Dibrugarh, Assam.
The victim was attacked by a mob of villagers after being accused of witchcraft, leaving her critically injured.
The arrested persons have been named as Suraj Sanga (31), Binod Sanga (60), Jumuna Sanga (30), Surajmoni Sanga (30), Sangita Sanga (30), Alisha Sanga (30), and Fulmoni Sanga (29).
An FIR (case No. 41/25) has been lodged against them under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Lahowal police station.
As per the police, the main accused, Binod Sanga, is a tantric who supposedly incited the attack by propagating unsubstantiated allegations against the old lady. The attack occurred on Monday at 1 No. Rajgarh in Romai Tea Estate.
The victim, Monika Sanga, was held responsible for the illness of some villagers and later accused of being a witch.
A group of about 25 individuals broke into her home, beat her up, and left her by the river in a life-threatening condition.
Her husband narrated the gory incident, explaining that when he attempted to act, the attackers broke into their house, horribly beat up his wife, and dragged her away. When they received the news, a police team from Lahowal police station rushed to the site and saved Monika Sanga.
She was rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for immediate treatment. The authorities have promised a proper investigation to serve justice to the victim.
The Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association (ATTSA) condemned the attack and urged the district administration to take stringent action against the culprits. A leader of ATTSA asked people to reject such beliefs and avoid such incidents in the future.
Witch-hunting is a serious issue in some regions of Assam, where rooted superstitions find themselves translating into brutal attacks on innocent people, most of all women.
