BAJALI: Serious riverbank erosion has rendered numerous families homeless as the river is swallowing huge chunks of land at Kathalmurighat in Assam's Bajali district. The worsening situation has also generated widespread resentment among the people, who are demanding prompt action by local authorities at the earliest.
The absence of a permanent bridge has compelled local residents to use temporary bamboo spans for crossing, which pose serious danger for daily travel. The arrangement is highly risky, especially for pregnant women and school children who need to use these unsafe routes in order to access vital services.
The residents have been complaining against the local administration for failing to initiate proper measures to stop soil erosion. Huge swathes of agricultural land, residential houses, and public spaces are being washed away by the river every year, but nothing significant has been implemented to put an end to the recurring crisis.
Adding to the community's concerns, locals have criticized Bhawanipur MLA Phanidhar Talukdar for allegedly neglecting developmental initiatives in the area. The situation is further aggravated by the near collapse of a nearby mosque, intensifying the urgency for immediate action.
With the ongoing erosion posing direct threats to people's lives and livelihoods, residents are requesting the government to take immediate action towards resolving the situation and putting in place sustainable measures that will safeguard residents' homes as well as civic infrastructure.
