SIVASAGAR: A district-level drawing competition on the theme ‘Ending Plastic Pollution’ was successfully organized on Sunday at Sibsagar Government Higher Secondary & Multipurpose School, under the joint initiative of the Assam Pollution Control Board, Sivasagar Regional Office, and local voluntary organization Sanmilta Sewa, Sivasagar.
The event was held as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Assam Pollution Control Board and in observance of the upcoming World Environment Day on June 5, aligning with the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) 2025 global theme.
More than 300 students from various schools across the district participated in the competition, which was divided into three groups: Group A (Lower Primary), Group B (Upper Primary), and Group C (High School) level.
The event was inaugurated by Manju Chetia, Principal of the host school, who highlighted the importance of sensitizing students to environmental issues through such creative platforms. She noted that competitions like these help instil environmental consciousness among young minds.
Jayanta Dutta, Officer-in-Charge of the Pollution Control Board’s Sivasagar Regional Office, and Dr Utpal Dutta, President of Sanmilita Sewa, delivered motivational speeches urging students to take environmental protection seriously and understand the dangers of unchecked plastic usage. Sarat Hazarika, General Secretary of Sanmilita Sewa, shared that this initiative is part of the organization’s ongoing social welfare efforts. He also mentioned past activities such as flood relief, scientific orchid conservation, and the promotion of traditional handloom through local women.
A panel of well-known artists from Sivasagar, Utpal Sharma, Aftab Ahmed, and Prashanta Gogoi, served as judges for the competition. The winners in Group A were- 1st: Charanya Bora, 2nd: Lian Jyoti Gogoi and 3rd: Priyanshu Mandal. In Group B, 1st: Niraj Pratim Bhardwaj, 2nd: Darshil Raj Gogoi, and 3rd: Sayonika Das. In Group C, 1st: Anshuman Hazarika, 2nd: Sarfaraz Amin Rahman, and 3rd: Siddharth Sharma. All winners were awarded certificates, trophies and cash prizes.
