Assam: Sivasagar mourns demise of former minister’s daughter Upasa Phukan

Sivasagar is in deep mourning following the sudden demise of Upasa Phukan, the only daughter of former Minister Bhrigu Kumar Phukan.

SIVASAGAR:  The historic town of Sivasagar is in deep mourning following the sudden demise of Upasa Phukan, the only daughter of former Assam Home Minister Bhrigu Kumar Phukan. She was also the descendant of the eminent Rai Bahadur Ganga Gobind Phukan. Upasa Phukan passed away unexpectedly in Guwahati on Sunday, leaving the people of her ancestral town grief-stricken.

It needs mentioning that Bhrigu Kumar Phukan, a renowned politician, had shifted his residence from Phukan Nagar, Sivasagar, to Guwahati at the beginning of his political career. Following his passing, Upasa continued to live in Guwahati with her mother Indira Phukan.

Condolences poured in from across the state, with Assam Agitation leader Rupam Kakoti expressing deep sorrow over her untimely demise. He remarked, “Like her father, Upasa Phukan was known for her bravery and courage. With her passing, an era of this esteemed political family comes to an end.”

Noted educationist Dipali Chaliha, wife of Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha, also expressed shock at the news. “Upasa was exceptionally talented, much like her father. Had she entered politics, she could have been as influential as Bhrigu Kumar Phukan. We are devastated by this loss. May the Almighty grant her eternal peace and give strength to her grieving mother.” Several other eminent personalities and organizations have also expressed their condolences, including Saurav Chaliha, younger son of Parag Chaliha, Raka Chaliha, wife of Pranabjit Chaliha, Shrinkhal Chaliha, son of Raka and Pranabjit Chaliha, Joyshree Chaliha, daughter of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, former Axam Xahitya Xabha President Imran Shah, renowned scholar Nahendra Padun, educationists Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Dr Saumarjyoti Mahanta, and Dr Jyotiprasad Saikia, historian and writer Prema Gogoi, former student leader Sarat Hazarika, President of Ujoni Axom Muslim Kalyan Parishad Monirul Islam Bora, ATASU Central President Basanta Gogoi, and AASU General Secretary Samiran Phukan.
