SIVASAGAR: Acting on specific input, Sivasagar Police launched an operation on the evening of January 29, 2025, in the Baasbari area of Bihubor Tea Estate under the jurisdiction of Nazira Police Station. During the operation, a person was apprehended, and three pieces of elephant tusks were recovered from his possession.
Meanwhile, earlier last month, a police constable from Arunachal Pradesh was arrested by Assam's forest department for illegal poaching in the Tikupani Reserved Forest, a protected area in the Jorhat forest division near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
Forest official Pramod Phukan led the operation late at night after receiving a tip about illegal activities in the area.
The poacher, Wangdem Chikcha, was caught during the crime. He is from Upper Kulam village in Tirap district and was a constable with the 2nd Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in Changlang district.
While two of Chikcha’s accomplices managed to flee, forest authorities had launched an ongoing search for them.
The incident upset the public and raised concerns about police involvement in illegal activities, especially in sensitive border areas. Officials stressed the need for better vigilance and cooperation between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to protect the environment.
The Tikupani Reserved Forest, known for its wildlife and as a home for endangered species, struggled to protect itself from illegal activities, even from those meant to stop them. Forest officials promised to investigate carefully and were searching for the suspects who had escaped.
