Assam: Sootea remembers VDP founder Hari Narayan Baruah on 57th death anniversary

JAMUGURIHAT: Hari Narayan Baruah, founder of the Village Defence Party (VDP), was remembered on his 57th death anniversary at a memorial meeting held at the VDP conference hall on the premises of Sootea Police Station on Sunday.

The programme began with the hoisting of the institutional flag by Sootea Police Station officer-in-charge Pranjal Kumar Nath. This was followed by floral tributes at the Shahid Bedi offered by Thana Level Nagarik Committee (TLNC) president Bhaba Saikia.

The memorial meeting was chaired by Sootea Police Station VDP president Deba Borah. Speakers, including Goutam Mahanta, Bhaba Saikia, officer-in-charge Pranjal Kumar Nath and Anu Mech, recalled Baruah’s contribution to village defence and the maintenance of peace and harmony.

VDP presidents and secretaries attended the meeting, which was conducted by Sootea Police Station VDP secretary Atul Borah.

Hari Narayan Baruah founded the VDP in 1949 with the objective of protecting villages and maintaining peace and harmony among villagers through a small but effective community-based force. August 23 is observed every year as his death anniversary to pay tribute to the founder of the organisation.
