Assam: State To Withdraw Minor Crime Cases To Reduce Backlog In Courts

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assam administration has decided to withdraw minor crime cases in order to lessen the backlog in the state's courts.

GUWAHATI: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for facilitating access to justice, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the Assam administration has decided to withdraw minor crime cases in order to lessen the backlog in the state's courts.

Almost 27,000 of these cases have already been withdrawn, and the action is likely to help resolve 1 lakh other criminal cases that are waiting, which would lighten the load on subordinate courts, the official noted.

Speaking in front of President Droupadi Murmu, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju at the Gauhati High Court's platinum anniversary festivities, the CM stated that "cases punishable up to three years with or without a fine and registered were taken into consideration for withdrawal."

He respected the HC's function as the genuine defender of human rights, steward of the Constitution, and upholder of our long-standing democratic ideals.

President Droupadi Murmu launched the "Bhoroxa" smartphone app at the Gauhati High Court on April 7 in an effort to help women feel safer, addressing a long-standing concern about their safety in India. Women in need of assistance can use the app, which features women-related programmes and a number of helplines throughout the state.

The bicycle procession and friendly cricket match between the Chief Justice XI and Chief Minister XI teams kicked off the week-long platinum jubilee celebrations of the Gauhati High Court on April 1.

The honourable chief judge of the Gauhati High Court, Dr. Sandeep Mehta, attended the event and gave a speech welcoming everyone and stressing the value of keeping peace and harmony for the protection of women and other marginalised groups in society.
