Assam: Students and Teachers of a School in Karbi Anlong Suffer in the Scorching Heat

KARBI ANGLONG: The whole state is suffering under a heat wave in the past few days. The heat has created a major problem for a particular school in the West Karbi Anglong district of the state of Assam, named the Shankar Basti Hindi Medium School which falls in the Socheng Educational Block in the district.

On one hand, there is no respite from the heat, and on the other hand the frequent power failures and load sheddings. As an effect of the same, the students have been forced to use their books and copies as fans to survive in the heat. Even the water supply has failed in the past few days, creating an unavailability of drinking water in the school.

Although the school authorities have created all the necessary infrastructure including fans, borewells etc, the lack of electricity has made everything inoperable. The school authorities have mentioned that they had lodged their complaints with the competent authorities, but no action has been taken so far to improve their conditions causing grave problems for the students as well as the teachers.

In another part of the state, the farmers are also facing problems because of the lack of rain and the scorching heat. Farmers of Jamugurihaat have raised complaints regarding the lack of proper functioning of the Bardikrai Irrigation Project and that it has not been able to supply water to the farmers of the region.

The farmers mentioned that because of the heat, large cracks have appeared in their fields and it has become impossible to begin the sowing of the crops. They added that it was impossible to plant the saplings of rice in the dry fields and unless the rains arrive anytime soon, it will become impossible to carry out paddy cultivation in this year.
