SILCHAR: Branding CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma as 'anti-Bengali,’ TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev asked the Chief Minister to declare the people residing in Barak Valley for three generations as “Khilonjiya” or indigenous. Dev, while addressing a press meet on Thursday, alleged that the Bengali speaking people were targeted as illegal infiltrators and were forcibly pushed back to the neighbouring country, violating all the legal procedures and human rights. "Bengali speaking people from other parts of the country have been brought to Silchar by special flights and later pushed back to Bangladesh", she alleged.
Sushmita Dev said that the eviction drive currently being undertaken was aimed to polarize the ensuing Assembly election. " Himanta Biswa Sarma's only aim is to consolidate his party's vote bank and hence Bengali speaking people are being targeted,” alleging this, Dev said that the Chief Minister miserably failed to fulfil the commitment he had made during the last Lok Sabha election that the D voter issue would be solved for good. Maintaining that the BJP government in the Centre had planned to eliminate the names of crores of genuine citizens belonging to a particular community from the electoral roll in Bihar and the Election Commission had accordingly initiated Special Intensive Revision, Dev feared that the same practice would begin in Assam too.
