DIBRUGARH: A suspected cow thief was lynched by the villagers in the Sessa area of Jokai in Dibrugarh while he allegedly attempted to steal cows in the area on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Koch Das alias Bhai of Dibrujan area of Dibrugarh.
"The thief had gone to lift cows in the Sessa area. Suddenly, he was caught by the locals and they beat him to death. The cow thief was working under Mintu Ali of Chalkhowa," a local resident alleged.
A team from Barbaruah Police Station reached the spot and took control of the situation. The body of Das has been sent for postmortem. According to reports, Koch Das stayed in the rented house of Mintu Ali, who is known for cow smuggling.
"A suspected cow thief was beaten to death by the locals of the Sessa area. We have registered a suo moto case and started our investigation. No arrest has been made so far but we will arrest those who took the law in their hands," said Rituraj Das, Officer-in-Charge of Barbaruah Police Station. Recently, a suspected goat thief lost his life in a mob attack while attempting to steal goats in Dibrugarh. The incident happened at Hatigarh Bokpara Division of Bokul Tea Estate in Dibrugarh. Incidents of cattle theft have been going on in Dibrugarh under the nose of the police but still they have failed to prevent these thefts.
