DIBRUGARH: Thousands of people thronged Ashokashtami Mela near Brahmaputra river in Dibrugarh on Saturday. On this auspicious day, people took a holy dip in the Brahmaputra river. The people were seen enjoying the mela. Small children and senior citizens were seen in the mela.

People from Tinsukia, Moran, Doomdooma have gathered in the Ashok Ashtami mela. Every year Ashokashtami mela is organized in Dibrugarh near Brahmaputra river.

Over 300 stalls were installed at the mela where people were seen buying goods for their family.

“I’ve come from Tinsukia to take holy dip in the Brahmaputra river. Every year I come to Dibrugarh during this day.  Ashokashtami has a great significance in Hindu culture. We observed this day by taking holy bath and pray for our family’s good health and long life,” said Nikita Mazumdar.

She added, “Proper arrangement should be made but the district administration didn’t made any such arrangment.” Ashokashtami is an auspicious Hindu festival celebrated with great fervour in India. This festival is devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

According to the Hindu calendar, Ashokashtami is observed on the ‘Ashtami’ (8th day) during the Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of moon) in the month of ‘Chaitra’. It falls during the propitious ‘Chaitra Navratri’ festival.
