GUWAHATI: Three individuals have been arrested in connection with a gang rape that occurred on the night of January 25 in Assam's Sonapur. The arrests took place on January 29 after the victim, a woman from North Guwahati, filed a complaint at Changsari Police Station.

The victim had traveled to Sonapur with a friend when the incident happened. Her female companion, a resident of Gouripur, is also accused of involvement. She allegedly lured the victim to a hotel, where an intoxicating substance was mixed into her food. The victim was then held overnight and sexually assaulted.

Following the complaint, police launched an investigation and arrested the three suspects—Lakshyadhar Tumung, Harkanta Kaman, and Gopal Subba. The case is under investigation at Sonapur Police Station.

In a similar incident, a horrific crime took place in Bhaga-Rajghat village under Dholai police station in Assam’s Cachar district, where a mother of two was allegedly raped and attacked with acid inside her home.

The incident occurred on the evening of January 22 when the accused, Badarul Islam, also known as Putul, reportedly broke into the house while the victim’s husband was away. According to reports, he tied her hands and feet, assaulted her in front of her children, and then poured acid on her.

The victim sustained severe burns covering over 70% of her body and is currently battling for her life at Silchar Medical Hospital. Authorities are investigating the case.
