GUWAHATI: Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal has said that a dedicated WhatsApp helpline is to be launched from February 15 to streamline the distribution of medicines in government hospitals. This move comes as a remedy to the long-standing shortage of medicines that plague patients across the state.

Recently, while visiting Sribhumi Civil Hospital, Minister Singhal met patients to know the availability of essential drugs. The feedback revealed a disturbing trend wherein patients have to buy medicines from private pharmacies despite the government's commitment to providing free essential drugs.

To counter this problem, the newly initiated WhatsApp complaint system will enable the patient to complain if their prescribed drug remains unavailable in the hospital's pharmacy. This mechanism will provide real-time tracking to ensure timely administrative response to complaints, thus improving the administration efficiency in drug supply.

The government has also sent an alert to doctors not to try any manipulation with medicine names since it would mean huge inconveniences for the patients. The program underlines the government's efforts to ensure that patients receive the necessary medication without unnecessary obstacles, thus creating much more reliability of healthcare in Assam. The WhatsApp helpline is expected to enhance transparency and accountability in the distribution of medicines within the state's healthcare system.
