GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) held extensive discussions on the implementation of 52 recommendations put forth by the Justice Biplab Sarma Committee regarding Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
Following deliberations, both parties reached a consensus on 38 recommendations, which will be implemented without delay. The remaining 14 recommendations will be taken up for further discussion in a follow-up meeting scheduled ten months from now.
A key decision taken during the meeting was that all government notifications, circulars, and official documents would be published in Assamese alongside English, effective from 14th April. In the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), these documents will also be published in Bodo to ensure linguistic inclusivity.
Additionally, all past government notifications, circulars, rules, and laws will be translated into Assamese to maintain uniformity in official records. To manage this extensive task, the Assam Government has enlisted the assistance of Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University. Given the vast volume of documents requiring translation, artificial intelligence (AI) technology may also be employed to expedite the process.
The Assam government has also announced new initiatives to promote Assamese literature and cultural heritage. As part of these efforts, the Assamese departments at Tezpur University and Assam University (Silchar) will be expanded, with a Padmanath Gohainbarua Chair established at Tezpur University and a Laxminath Bezbaruah Chair set up at Assam University, Silchar.
