DHUBRI: Dhubri district authorities raided National Highway 17 in Gauripur and found six sacks of illegally transported tobacco in passenger buses. Some of the sacks were disguised as mosquito net bundles. The raid was carried out by tax officials to stop tax evasion and illegal transport of goods.
Officials said that goods worth lakhs are smuggled every day using passenger buses to avoid taxes. These buses are carrying illegal goods without the proper documents or shipment records.
During the raid, a passenger bus named Bhowmik (AS 15 C 7132), traveling from West Bengal to Dhakuakhana, was intercepted. The bus, operating on the Cooch Behar–Dhakuakhana route, was found carrying illegal baggage without valid shipment records.
The seized goods have been moved to the Dhubri tax office for further investigation. Authorities have promised strong action against those involved in illegal transportation and tax evasion. An inquiry is in progress, and officials have warned transport operators not to be involved in such illegal activities.
Meanwhile, earlier last month, in a decisive crackdown on illegal gambling, Dhubri police had arrested a teer agent near Dhubri Girls' College on Tuesday afternoon. The accused, Samarjit Saha, a resident of Ward No. 6, Chatiantola, had been apprehended at a pan shop where he was allegedly conducting gambling activities.
In response to a concerned citizen, authorities had uncovered five teer ticket books, a Realme mobile phone assumed to have been utilized for communication with clients, and cash amounting to Rs 2635 suspected to have been earned from the illegal racket. In order to curb the rising menace of illegal gambling activities in the region, legal contraventions had been initiated under the relevant sections.
