DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh Police arrested two persons on Tuesday in connection with the mob lynching of a youth at Hatigarh Bokpara Division of Bokul Tea Estate in Dibrugarh, suspecting him of goat theft. The accused have been identified as Lakhindra Bhakta and Sanjib Munda.
On Monday, an enraged mob thrashed two youths suspecting them to be goat thieves, and one among them died on the spot. The other was admitted to a hospital in a critical condition. The incident took place at around 10.30 AM at Hatigarh Bokpara Division of Bokul Tea Estate in Dibrugarh on Monday.
“The two suspected goat thieves arrived on a scooter and were caught red-handed by local residents. The enraged crowd allegedly assaulted the duo and set their scooter on fire. One of them died on the spot due to severe injuries,” said a police official.
Police have picked up six persons in connection with the incident and after questioning them, two persons involved in the mob lynching incident were arrested. The deceased has been identified as Shankar Gogoi of Borbaruah, while the injured Jyotirmoy Hazarika of Boiragimoth is undergoing treatment at AMCH.
“We have arrested two persons in connection with the incident and forwarded them to court. After the incident, six persons were picked up and after interrogation, we have arrested two. Our investigation is on and more arrests are likely to happen,” said Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy.
