Assam: Two Arrested In Guwahati Railway Station With Smuggled Gold

GUWAHATI: At the Guwahati railway station on Tuesday, city police detained two people who were in possession of a significant amount of gold. A squad of police under the direction of OC Prosenjit Das conducted an operation and apprehended the pair from the Tezwas Express train at the railway station after acting on intelligence inputs.

The duo's envelope containing the gold, which weighed 1 kg and 3 grammes, was found to be empty. The gold that was seized is alleged to have cost about Rs 60 lakh. It has been discovered that the pair intended to sell the gold by shipping it from Manipur to Delhi.

Hafiz Yasin and Aslam Sheikh have been named as the two people that were detained. In the meantime, a case was filed against the pair in accordance with the relevant laws. To find more connections, an inquiry is being conducted.

A false gold statue in the form of a boat was taken from two Gorchuk residents who were recently arrested by City police. The phoney gold was removed from the duo's hands after a team of Garchuk police raided a home in the Katahbari neighbourhood.

Between 2019 and November 2022, Assam and other Northeastern states (aside from Sikkim) saw the seizure of up to 897.336 kg of smuggled gold, making it abundantly evident that the area has evolved into a favourite route for this illegal activity.

166.849 kg of illegal gold was seized in 2019, 242.845 kg in 2020, 296.580 kg in 2021, and 191.062 kg between January and November this year, according to sources in the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The sources also stated that 213 cases were filed in connection with the gold that was confiscated.
