JORHAT: As per the orders of the Director General of Police, Assam, Sub-Inspector (UB) Indeswar Handique of Jorhat Police Station and LNK(AB)/651 Dinesh Seal of the SP Office, Jorhat, were suspended by the Superintendent of Police, Jorhat, with effective from March 12, 2025. The suspension was due to allegations of gross misconduct, dereliction of duty and involvement in demanding and accepting bribes.

Meanwhile, earlier last year, the mysterious death of a person inside the police lock-up at Tongona Police Station in Kakopathar, Tinsukia district led to the suspension of Officer-in-Charge Khogen Borah and Constable Chittaranjan Baruah.

An irate mob of hundreds, supported by several organizations, blocked NH 15 for several hours, demanding a high-level judicial inquiry with the intervention of the Chief Minister, Director General of Police and the Human Rights Commission.

According to reports, local villagers caught a 22-year-old goat thief, Dhanjit Moran of Majgaon Tongona and thrashed him before handing him over to Tongona police. The police took him into custody and kept him in the lock-up overnight, where he died.

The police informed his family that Dhanjit Moran had allegedly committed suicide and sent the victim’s body for post-mortem without informing the family, which angered the local people. Taking cognizance of the incident, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Abhijit Gurav suspended both police personnel.
