DIBRUGARH: Two leopard cubs were found abandoned in New Bochapathar village under the Dikom police outpost in Dibrugarh on Monday morning. The cubs, estimated to be between three to four weeks old, were discovered lying in a shallow canal amidst tea bushes by estate workers during their morning rounds.
A forest official said, "The cubs seem healthy and are about 2-3 weeks old. Their mother probably left them for a short time because of people nearby, which is a normal way for leopards to protect their young."
The official also warned, "We told everyone to stay far away and not touch the cubs." Any human scent on the cubs could potentially cause the mother to reject them, which would be harmful for their survival."
"The health of both the cubs is stable, and they are currently being monitored by our team of veterinarians," he added.
The discovery caught the attention of local people, so forest officials set up a safe area around the cubs to protect them.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, four leopard cubs, estimated to be around four weeks old, were found abandoned in a garden at Sasoni Bhokot village in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Tuesday morning.
The cubs were discovered in a secluded area of a garden owned by local farmer Pramod Mahanta, drawing a crowd of curious onlookers.
After being notified, the forest department quickly sent a team with veterinarians to protect the cubs. Officials said the cubs are in good condition and will be taken to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) near Kaziranga National Park. There, they will get special care. The CWRC is skilled and ready to take care of young animals.
