DIBRUGARH: In a shocking incident, two men in Assam's Dibrugarh district killed and ate a leopard. The matter came to light when the two persons involved tried to sell the leopard's bones and skin in Moran. As per inputs, it is not just the two men, but people from three villages of the Nahoroni region were involved in the community feast involving the leopard's meat.

After consuming the big cat's flesh, the bones and skin had been kept hidden to be sold later. The leopard's teeth and nails were dug underground. The two persons arrested in Moran have been identified as Madhurjya Sonowal and Pankaj Barua.

The duo was trying to sell the leopard skin and bones for about Rs 2 lakh. One of the arrested persons, Pankaj Barua, was the one who laid the trap and killed the leopard. This is not the first time that such an incident has happened in Assam.

In 2020, the villagers of the Dillabari area of the Tingkong revenue circle in Upper Assam's Dibrugarh district killed a leopard and consumed its meat.

Notably, man-animal conflict has been rising rapidly because of the shrinking of forest cover. Earlier on February 1, a leopard was hunted and killed by locals after it injured two individuals at the Ganeshbari tea estate in Dibrugarh.
