DIGBOI: Upon instruction of Inspector Digboi Police Station Dibya Jyoti Dutta, the Chairman Thana Level Nagorik Committee (TLNC) has on Sunday ordered the dissolution of two Village Defence Party (VDP) committees.
Dutta, who has also been the ex-officio member of the TLNC, informed that Panbari Mahila VDP and Saheb Pother VDP under Digboi Police Station in Tinsukia district were dissolved from immediate effect for taking the laws into their own hands. “New committees are being constituted for both the villages,” informed the OC. “We are in receipt of multiple public complaints against the working nature of the Saheb Pother VDP unit, thus leading to the immediate dissolution of the committee,” said Dutta.
Meanwhile, according to Dhiraj Gogoi, the Chairman TLNC, an FIR was registered with the local police against the Panbari Mahila VDP for allegedly involving in moral policing on Sunday morning and assaulting a married couple of Philobari who had visited the Panbari village with a genuine purpose. The VDP members, unmindful of the assigned responsibility, allegedly beat them suspecting them to be child lifters.
Pertinent questions on the modus operandi of the organization raise concerns in spite of holding regular monthly meetings and awareness among the office bearers of the VDP committees operative under the jurisdiction.
