GUWAHATI: Jatindra Nath Roy, UDA of Hadurhat Dharmasala H.S. School, Dhubri district has been trapped and arrested red-handed today by a team from the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption while accepting money for transferring the complainant's service sheet and LPC.

On August 17, the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam apprehended the Block Elementary Education Officer from Rani, Kamrup (Rural) for taking bribes.

According to the Directorate, Lachit Basumatary was arrested for demanding money to complete a pending work related to post transfer at his office.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant reached out to vigilant operatives, who laid down a trap near the office of the Block Elementary Education Officer in Rani, following which Basumatary was caught red-handed in his office chamber along with the accepted bribe amount.

During a further search of his personal Bolero vehicle, the team recovered a cash amount of Rs 1 lakh.

According to sources, Basumatary was arrested after the husband of the teacher in question lodged a complaint with the V&AC that the BEEO had demanded a bribe for processing pending transfer-related work. A trap was accordingly laid near the office of the BEEO and Basumatary was caught red-handed in his office chamber along with the bribe amount. The bribe amount was seized from Basumatary's possession in the presence of independent witnesses.

A House search of the accused is also being carried out and a case has been registered at the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) police station under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against the accused official. Necessary legal follow-up action is underway.

Notably, the state's anti-corruption cell is keeping a strict vigil to curb all kinds of corruption activities across the state. With each passing day, such cases of bribes are coming to the fore. So far, several government officials have been caught red-handed while accepting bribes in the last few months.
