Assam: ULFA-I Awards Death Sentence To Cadre For Escaping

Guwahati: The United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has awarded the death sentence to one of its cadres, who tried to flee from the camp.

The cadre has been identified as Rihon Asom alias Mohammed Saiful Islam.

"In the said House, the convict confessed to his crime and requested to give him a final chance with the intention of serving in the organization through self-correction again. The accused also gave a written and visual promise that he will never again repeat such cowardly, despicable and anti-national acts in the future," said an official statement.

The militant outfit further said that in view of this, the Lower Trial House, at the end of a thorough review of all aspects, positively recognized the requested last chance sought by the accused Islam and gave the verdict of a mild punishment by giving physical labour instead of the death penalty.

As per the statement, the cadre fled for the second time from the shelter at around 2:00-3:00 AM on August 23. However, he was captured on August 25 and taken back to camp again.

In May this year, ULFA-I issued the death penalty for two of its cadres identified as Dhanjit Das and Sanjib Sarma for allegedly involved in spying.

In a statement issued on May 6, the ULFA-I alleged that Dhanjit Das alias Roopak Asom hailing from Barpeta district made an attempt to escape from the Salman camp on April 24. However, his attempt went in vain as he was captured by a travelling team of ULFA on April 25.

He was then interrogated by the team of ULFA and confessed that he provoked some of the other cadres to flee the camp along with him. He also admitted that he had disclosed the inside information to the Assam Police.

On the other hand, the ULFA-I detained Sanjib Sarma of Muktapur in Baihata Chariali in Myanmar and he was allegedly said to be the undercover agent of Assam Police.
