Guwahati: In a major development, Assam police on Monday seized a total of 4,728kg ganja hidden under rubber bundles in a truck near the Assam-Tripura border.

As per the Superintendent of police of Karimganj district Padmanabh Baruah, the market value of the seized ganja is around Rs 15 crore.

Acting on a tip-off, police launched a drive at Churaibari (Assam-Tripura border) Naka checkpoint on National Highway (NH) 8 on Monday evening.

The ganja-laden truck which was coming from Tripura was stopped during the Naka checking and the ganja was seized.

However, the driver of the truck managed to flee leaving the vehicle behind on the road.

"The driver must have sensed that he'll get caught so he fled leaving the vehicle on road. The truck was loaded with rubber sheets from the upper side but the packets of ganja were kept inside. The cost of 4,728 kg ganja in markets will be around Rs 15crore according to our sources," HT quoted Baruah as saying.

As per Baruah, the seized ganja was cultivated in Tripura and it was being transported to other parts of the country.

He also said that ganja-supplying groups are using Karimganj as a route for their business to spread in various states but police are preventing them on a large scale.

Meanwhile, taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appreciated the efforts of the Karimganj police for seizing one of the largest drug quantities.

"In largest seizure in a while by Assam Police. Ganja was hidden under sheets of natural rubber in a truck coming from a neighbouring state on Monday. Great work, Keep it up", he tweeted.

Notably, it has been observed that drug smugglers are now engaging teenage boys to peddle drugs. One such incident came to light after Noonmati Police apprehended two teenage boys on Monday and recovered 29.2 kg ganja from their possession.

One of the apprehended boys has been identified as Banjiedskhem Umdor (18), son of Meskandar Wahlang of village Tyrsad under Mawngap Police Station in the East Khasi Hills district. The other boy is aged 17 years.

According to police sources, the boys had brought the ganja consignment from Jorabat and they were supposed to deliver it at Khanapara in Guwahati. However, they took the wrong route by mistake and were apprehended at Forest Gate Tiniali in the city.
