KOKRAJHAR: The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical & Paramedical Institute in Kokhrajhar was sealed by the district administration on January 20 as it was found to be operating without appropriate permissions and regulatory approvals.

Executive Magistrate Dhrubajyoti Das collaborated with personnel from Kokhrajhar Police Station to launch an enforcement action aimed to tackle illegal and unrecognized health science institutions in the state.

According to government regulations, Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS) must grant appropriate license to any institution providing instruction or training in the health sciences, including pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, and laboratory technician courses.

According to Notification No. MER 307386/2 issued 06-06-2023, private universities and institutions must obtain affiliation with SSUHS in order to operate lawfully in Assam.

The district administration took the drastic measure of shutting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical & Paramedical Institute since it was unable to secure the required affiliation and approvals.

The purpose of this action is to guarantee that health science education in the state complies with established norms and laws and to stop the institute from deceiving students by giving degrees and diplomas that may be void.

In December 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) searched CMJ University offices in Shillong and the residences of Chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha and his family, uncovering evidence of a fake degree scam.

The university issued around 20,570 fake degrees, defrauding students and laundering Rs. 83.52 crore. The ED froze Rs. 1.53 crore and attached properties worth Rs. 48.76 crore. The case stems from a 2013 dissolution order by Meghalaya's Governor, with investigations and legal proceedings ongoing.
