Assam: Union Leader Arrested in Silchar for Suspected Links With Maoists

SILCHAR : A trade union leader from Assam's Silchar has been arrested for suspected connection with a Maoists group. The accused has been identified as Dharitri Sharma, leader of the Assam Mojuri Shramik Union, who was caught by the detectives of Crime Branch on Saturday evening. Sharma was taken to Guwahati for further interrogation by the crime branch of Guwahati police.

Cachar SP Nomal Mahatto stated that, during a deep investigation into Maoist leaders who are already in custody, the investigators found clues against Dharitri Sharma, the Union leader, who is suspected to have links with Maoist leader Arun Kumar Bhattachajee. He was arrested right after this revelation.

The officials kept Sharma away from his residence at Sonapur in Borkhola at Cachar district of the state. Dharitiri, after the arrest was questioned by the Crime Branch team in Guwahati. Assam police is vigorously looking to eliminating the Maoists in the state. Many operations against them have been laid out and people have been detained for links with the rebel group.  

On 7th March 2022, Maoist leader Arun Kumar Bhattarcharya aka Kanchan Da was arrested from the Cachar district of Assam. Kanchan Da, who was already in police custody stated that Dharitri Sharma was linked to their group. The accused was arrested on the basis of this revelation. There are over 200 cases against the Maoist leader ,Arun Kumar Bhattacharya.

Earlier this year on 7th of April, Assam police arrested one person from Kamrup district for his suspicious links with the Maoists. The accused was identified as Hridoy Kalita, a resident of Chaygaon Assam. According to reports, after the arrest of Maoist Central Committee leader Kanchan and during his interrogation , the team was led to Hridoy Kalita.

On this, CM HImanta Biswa Sarma said the the Maoist people are trying to set up their base in Assam and the police department is effectively handling this situation. He also assured that the state will be free from any kind of Maoist influence soon.
