'Arrested Maoist received funds from Kanchan da'

GUWAHATI: Maoist activist Hriday Kalita alias Joy alias Suresh Kalita, who was arrested from Kukurmara near here on April 5, has confessed during interrogation that he served as the secretary of an extreme Left-wing organization named 'Gana Sanskriti Manch, Assam' and also as a top official of the Progressive Students' Youth Federation, Assam.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati Harmeet Singh, Kalita has named several persons working with him from the various parts of the State.

Further, he said, it has come to light during the investigation that Hriday Kalita has been an active Maoist cadre and close associate of CPI (Maoist) central committee member Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee alias Kanchan da, who was arrested by the Guwahati Police recently. Kanchan da regularly provided financial assistance to Kalita for expanding organizational activities in the region, he said.

The police have recovered incriminating documents/literature relating to the Maoist organization from Kalita's possession.

Kalita was produced in court on April 6. He was remanded to police custody for seven days.

The Crime Branch of Guwahati Police registered a case {03/2022 u/s 120(B)/120/121/121(A)/122/384 IPC, R/W Section 16/17/18/18(D)/19/20 UA(P) Act} after the arrest of Hriday Kalita.
