Assam University professor Murali Basa suspended

SILCHAR: Accused of sexual misconduct towards some students, Murali Basa, an Associate Professor of Assam University had been suspended. AU authority in its 151st Executive Council meeting held on August 5 had decided to put Basa, a faculty of Performing Arts department, under suspension following a report submitted by a two member committee, constituted to probe a number of allegations against him. Allegations included sexual misconduct, misbehaviour with non-teaching staff of the department in an intoxicated condition. The committee was formed in March last following an incident of sexual misconduct in January. The report was submitted in April, but due to two episodes of a massive flood, it remained pending. On August 5, finally the EC decided to suspend Basa.

Meanwhile, Lakshmi Narayan Shetty, a professor of Agricultural Engineering of AU had also been suspended on the charges of service irregularities and disobeying the authority. The decision of suspending Shetty was taken in the 149th EC.
