Assam: Wild elephant electrocuted in Morangi

GOLAGHAT: A wild elephant died after coming into contact with a live wire in Murphulani in Morangi under Khumtai constituency in Golaghat district on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the Murphulani area, where the elephant had been causing damage to homes and agricultural fields, and had even killed a few people. Local residents had named the elephant Laden due to the terror it inspired. Following the incident, the locals offered prayers and paid their respects to the deceased elephant. The local forest department was informed, and a team of veterinarians and forest officials conducted a post-mortem examination before burying the elephant’s body.

Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia visited the site and expressed condolences on social media, describing the incident as unfortunate. An investigation into the incident has been initiated.

A local youth described the incident, saying that the 30-35 year old male elephant had wandered out of the Nambor Doigrung Reserved Forest and was eating bamboo trees near a house’s latrine, where electric wires were installed.

After the incident, the forest department was informed, and officials from the Golaghat District Forest Office, including the Divisional Forest Officer and Range Officer, arrived at the scene.
