BOKAKHAT: In a disturbing incident, a wild elephant entered Panikora village under Morongi Mouza in Golaghat district, injuring a local resident and causing extensive property damage. The elephant attacked a man named Sagar Bora in the courtyard of his home, leaving him injured and destroying his concrete house in full view of the villagers. The animal also damaged the backyard of the residence before retreating.

Sagar Bora sustained injuries in the sudden attack but managed to survive, crediting his escape to sheer luck. His family members narrowly avoided harm during the incident. The destruction left the household in shock, with neighbours recounting the terrifying moments as they watched helplessly from a safe distance.

The incident is part of a growing pattern of human-elephant conflict in the region. In the Numaligarh and Morongi areas, wild elephants have become a frequent sight, both during the day and at night. Their presence, while awe-inspiring to some, has become a source of fear and concern for many residents. Such sightings are now so common that villagers report feeling desensitized to the danger.

In a similar occurrence just a day earlier, around 4 p.m., a wild elephant emerged from the nearby forest and entered another part of Panikora village. It walked into a household courtyard and began plucking jackfruits from a tree. Despite villagers’ efforts to scare it away through shouting and noise, the elephant remained undeterred and continued its foraging and destruction.

The problem extended beyond residential areas. Labourers in the tea estates of Numaligarh have also reported regular encounters with wild elephants roaming freely within the plantations, even during working hours. Moreover, the Deopahar area has seen elephants straying onto National Highway 39, disrupting traffic and raising serious concerns for the safety of commuters.
