TANGLA: In a tragic incident, a wild elephant trampled one to death inside Majuli Tea Estate in Udalguri district along the Indo-Bhutan border on Monday. The victim identified as Bhutia Karmakar (56) was collecting leaves from wild trees to feed his goats at Section No. 37 of Majuli Tea Estate when all of a sudden the loner charged him.  Eyewitnesses said the wild elephant, a male loner which is believed to be separated from a herd, had been known for creating panic in the area for sometime attacked the victim suddenly, leaving him no chance to escape; moreover, the cloudy weather and rain might have also reduced visibility, leading to his unfortunate death. Local residents have expressed concern over the rising menace of wild elephants in the region, urging the forest department to take swift measures to prevent such tragic incidents. The locals have also alleged that the Dhansiri Forest Division of Udalguri, citing a lack of manpower and resources, never makes an effort to chase such loners who have been frequenting the area for some time.
