Assam: Woman Commits Suicide Amidst Crackdown Against Child Marriage

A woman, who is also a mother of two children committed suicide after the state's massive drive against child marriage. The deceased woman was a widow and ever since her husband's demise, she was residing with her father. 

The lady was scared that her father would be behind the bars as she got married before attaining the age of 18. As per the reports, the deceased's husband died at the time of Covid-19 pandemic. Following CMs order to arrest each and everyone involved in child marriage, the lady out of fear hung herself in her room. 

She hung herself with the help of a cloth in a ceiling fan. The woman has been identified as Khushboo Begum who married to Manoj Mia in the year 2012. 

As a result of the crackdown launched in the state of Assam, now the women has raised question against this particular decision of the administration. Women from several parts of the state came forward to protest against the government's crackdown against child marriage. The women in large numbers have raised their voice after the arrests of their respective husbands and sons. 

However, the CM is very stern about the drive and stated that it will continue in the coming days as well. Himanta Biswa Sarma also mentioned that, child marriages that are registered under the age group of 14 years, will be considered as a bailable crime. 

The CM further emphasised on the fact that, the news of 2,211 arrested accused will help lakhs of girls from getting trapped in this evil situation. On 4th of February, Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan, the spokesman of Assam Police department informed that, 2170 have been nabbed in connection with the matter.
