NAGAON: Tensions gripped Amguri Sang village in Assam's Nagaon district after a woman died while trying to escape from an elephant attack on Thursday afternoon. The deceased, identified as 56-year-old Matreyi Terompi, reportedly fell from a steep hill when she ran to save her life from the tusker.
According to forest officials, Terompi was on her way to collect firewood in the Bagser Reserve Forest, which forms part of the Kaziranga National Park, bordering the village. Niloy Baruah, Burhapahar range officer, said the incident occurred at around 11 am when the woman was accompanied by her neighbours.
"After encountering the elephant, the others managed to escape, but she was left behind. She sustained severe leg injuries, and we suspect she slipped and fell due to the area's steep terrain, resulting in her death," Baruah said. Villagers later recovered the woman's body.
Forest officials said elephants frequently roam the forest in search of food. Depredation squads have been deployed to monitor their movements and alert villagers of any approaching herds to prevent human-animal conflicts. The forest department has repeatedly warned villagers against entering the forest without informing authorities, but such incidents continue to occur, the officer added.
Meanwhile, in a tragic incident on February 24, a school girl had been fatally attacked by a wild elephant in the Dumruguri region of Mainaguri village under the Kachugaon Forest Division of Assam. Phungja Musahari, a student and daughter of Swapan Musahari, had been the victim.
According to reports, Phungja had been attacked by the elephant, resulting in her death on the spot. It was the second death that month caused by attacks from elephants in the area. On February 13, another elderly woman named Satyabati Basumatary had died due to a similar attack in Bonagaon village.
