NAGAON: A day-long workshop on solid waste management was held at Dhing College, Nagaon on Monday last. The workshop was organized by the Assam Science Technology and Environment in collaboration with Eco Club, Dhing College, and supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India.
The primary aim of the workshop was to educate students and provide them with a holistic understanding of vermicomposting, solid waste management (SWM) & rain water harvesting issues, ill effects of bad/wrong practices of vermicomposting, solid waste management (SWM) & rain water harvesting, best practices of vermicomposting, solid waste management (SWM) & rain water harvesting and importance of proper sanitation.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Biman Hazarika, principal of Dhing College. In his welcome address, he highlighted the need and importance of vermicomposting, solid waste management (SWM) & rain water harvesting in the present situation. Dr Sanjeeb Kumar Nath, Co-ordinator of Eco Club, Dhing College, elucidated the workshop’s objectives.
Following the inaugural session, technical sessions commenced. The program witnessed the active participation of 10 High School Eco-Club coordinators and students as deputed by the IS of Nagaon. Over 70 participants, comprising deputed teachers, faculty, resource persons, and students actively engaged in the comprehensive event.
Dr Anju Mala Deka, Senior Scientist, AAU-ZRS, Shillongani, Nagaon, attended the first technical session as the key resource person and highlighted on vermicomposting and its practical implications. Dr Ajit Debnath, Associate Professor & HOD, Department of Economics, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalay, Nagaon, attended the 2nd technical session as the key resource person and enlightened on solid waste management and its valuable applications. Dr Bichitra Bikash, Deputy Register, Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalay, Nagaon, was present in the 3rd technical session as the resource person and highlighted on rain water harvesting and its working system while Mousumi Terangpi, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, Dhing College, Nagaon, attended the fourth technical session as the resource person and highlighted the issues with an audio-visual video on rain water harvesting.
