BOKAKHAT: World Bee Day was observed on Tuesday at a community hall in Chinikhan Chari-Ali, Kuruabahi, Bokakhat. The event was organized by Papumoni Honey Bee Apiary, a bee-keeping and research center led by renowned beekeepers, trainers, and social workers Papumoni Hazarika and Kakoli Hazarika, in collaboration with Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, and support from the local community.

Present at the event were Dr Mukul Kumar Deka, Parthapratim Gyanodoy Das, several research scholars from Assam Agricultural University, as well as local beekeepers and community members. In the event led by trainer and beekeeper Papumoni Hazarika, key topics were discussed including the potential of beekeeping, the challenges it faces, its role in environmental conservation, and the significant contribution of bees to agricultural productivity.

As part of the initiative, Assam Agricultural University distributed beehive boxes and handbooks on beekeeping to enthusiastic local beekeepers. Several beekeepers from the Kuruabahi area were also honoured during the programme.

Since nearly 80% of the greater Kuruabahi region depends on agriculture, it is expected that the celebration of World Bee Day will open new opportunities for beekeeping in the area. Notably, a song composed, written, and performed by Papumoni Hazarika, highlighting bee activity and its impact on agriculture, captivated the audience.
