SILCHAR: In observance of World Hypertension Day 2025, the Cachar district administration launched a comprehensive month-long health awareness and screening campaign on Saturday. The initiative was formally inaugurated by the Cachar District Commissioner, Mridul Yadav, who opened a health screening camp at the DC Office premises.
During the inauguration, Commissioner Yadav emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and preventive care, setting the tone for an extensive district-wide health outreach. The camp provided free screening for hypertension, diabetes, sickle cell anaemia, and tuberculosis, targeting all government employees. Yadav encouraged all residents of Cachar to make full use of the free healthcare services, stating that timely detection of high blood pressure and blood sugar levels can play a crucial role in preventing serious, long-term health issues.
The campaign plans to extend these free health screening camps to SM Dev Civil Hospital, all 41 Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs), as well as to 271 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and Sub-Centres throughout the district. This widespread coverage aims to maximize accessibility and ensure no one is left behind.
Additional District Commissioner (Health), Dr. Khalida Sultana Ahmed, highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death in India. She pointed out that hypertension alone claims over 1.6 million lives annually, and the situation in Assam is particularly concerning, with nearly one in five adults affected by the condition.
The campaign will run from May 17 to June 16 and primarily targets individuals aged 30 and above. Alongside the screenings, the initiative incorporates educational outreach to promote healthier lifestyles. Frontline health workers have been mobilized across the district to ensure maximum participation. They will also provide guidance on healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and stress management to help reduce the risk of hypertension and related illnesses.
