Assam: World Turtle Day observed at Nagsankar

World Turtle Day celebrated at Nagsankar Temple guest house with Kaziranga NP, TSA Foundation, WWD, and Aranyak.

JAMUGURIHAT: World Turtle Day convened by the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, Nagsankar temple management committee, TSA Foundation India, in association with WWD and Aranyak, was held at the guest house of Nagsankar temple on Friday with a daylong programme. The programme began with a Borgeet performed by Jitashree Ojha Hazarika followed by a dihanaam performed by the members of the Agnigarh Natghar.

Ritu Pawan Bora, AFS, DFO, Biswanath Wildlife division, forwarded a welcome address. Rajib Barua, Secretary of Nagsankar temple management committee, and member of Genesis of turtle conservation at Nagsankar temple, and Lochan Bora, President of Agnigarh Natghar, and member of Genesis of turtle conservation at Nagsankar temple, briefly presented lectures on the types and varieties of turtles found in Nagsankar temple.

Dr Sonali Ghosh, IFS, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, attended the programme and stated the need and importance of preserving turtles. Dr Ghosh briefly presented the importance and significance of observing World Turtle Day.

Naduar MLA Padma Hazarika graced the programme as a chief guest and spoke about the ongoing projects on turtle hatching and preservation. He made a humble appeal to all concerned to put their efforts together to save turtles. A leaflet containing information about various types of turtles was unveiled by Naduar MLA Padma Hazarika in the presence of Dr Sonali Ghosh and dignitaries.

The programme was attended by dignitaries, students from Dakhin Nagsankar and Nagsankar High schools besides local residents. At the end of the programme, certificates of participation were awarded to the students. All the proceedings were carried out by Pallab Hazarika while Sushmita Kar, Project Coordinator of TSAFI, offered a vote of thanks.

It is to be mentioned here that the historic Nagsankar temple is a safe house for various types of turtles and is famous for it. A total of 19 varieties of turtles are found at Nagsankar temple.
