Dhekiajuli: In a bid to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands, an educational programme was organized at Dhekiajuli Vivekananda Vidyapeeth High School to commemorate World Wetlands Day 2025. With the theme ‘Protecting Wetlands for Our Collective Future,’ the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from six schools across the Dhekiajuli Co-District.
Students from Dhekiajuli Vivekananda Vidyapeeth High School, Dhekiajuli Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Dhekiajuli Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Hindi Rashtra Bhasha Vidyapeeth, Smart Kid School and Tezpur Don Bosco School took part in the initiative which combined interactive learning with a field study.
One of the highlights of the event was a field study trip to the Singri Wetlands where students observed the ecological significance of wetlands firsthand. Guided by experts, they explored the diverse flora and fauna, gaining valuable insights into the role of wetlands in maintaining environmental balance. Prior to the field visit a knowledge-sharing session was conducted in the digital classroom of Dhekiajuli Vivekananda Vidyapeeth Higher Secondary School. The session featured prominent speakers who provided research-backed insights on wetland conservation.
Dr Nripen Nayak, Assistant Professor of Tinsukia College, addressed students through a digital presentation emphasizing the role of wetlands in preserving Assam’s indigenous fish species. Vivek Bhuyan, Assistant Professor in the Geography Department of Punjab University, Chandigarh, shared his perspective on the alarming transformation of wetlands into residential areas. He advocated for sustainable practices, urging the community to retain wetlands for agriculture and water conservation rather than urban development.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from students and faculty members to spread awareness and take active steps in preserving wetlands. Through their participation in the field study and expert discussions, students left the event with a deeper understanding of the urgent need to protect wetlands for future generations. As wetlands continue to face threats from encroachment and climate change, initiatives like these serve as a crucial reminder of their role in sustaining biodiversity and supporting livelihoods.
