Assamese language ‘distorted’ by PWD in Mangaldai

Our Correspondent

MANGALDAI: The Rangiya National Highway Division of PWD has contributed a new letter in the Assamese alphabet. This is evident in the number of mileposts displayed along the NH-15 at Mangaldai.

In the mileposts, the name of Mangaldai has been written in Assamese using a distorted version of the Assamese letter of the alphabet. This distortion of the Assamese language, that too, at the behest of the officials of the PWD (NH wing) has been resented by various organizations of Mangaldai like Mangaldai Media Circle, All Darrang District Students’ Union, AJYCP and Sangbad Sahitya Chora. They expressed deep concern over the distorted reflection of the Assamese language in the ‘milepost’ constructed by a government department and demanded the official concerned to seek apology before the people of the district.

However, when contacted over phone, Executive Engineer of Rangiya NH Division, Hiren Das admitted the fault of the department and assured to rectify it within a short time.
