Assam's Govt Formation: Incumbent CM Sarbananda Sonowal, FM Himanta Biswa Sarma Rush to Delhi

Guwahati: Amid a lot of debate and speculations on who will be the next Chief Minister of Assam, incumbent Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himnata Biswa Sarma have been summoned to New Delhi on Saturday (May 8). They would be meeting BJP National President J P Nadda at 10.30 AM at Nadda's residence.

The summon came in a late Friday night development.

It has been six days that the results for the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly have been announced. The next Chief Minister of the state is yet to be announced. This time BJP did not announce its CM candidate when the party went to the polls. It now seems to be just a matter of time that BJP would announce who the next man will be for the top job.

Picking the CM for Assam this time could be a tough job for the party as the mood on the ground and within Assam BJP has changed. Several of the MLAs are in favour of having Himanta Biswa Sarma as their CM.

The public, in general, is also in favour of Sarma who has been almost single-handedly and tirelessly working to ensure that the COVID situation does not get out of hand and snowball into uncontrollable proportion. Sarma has been leading from the front, visiting ICUs and crematoria to ensure that nobody faced any issue.

Sonowal on the other hand had led to the maiden and historic victory of BJP in Assam in 2016, he has successfully managed to address volatile and sensitive issues like NRC and CAA in the state. He too has strong support from a faction of BJP and RSS and certain parts of Assam.

What party insiders say is that the party top brass could be a little worried. Picking either Sonowal or Sarma could trigger inner-party repercussion given the mood among the party MLAs and workers.
