GUWAHATI: The population of water birds in Assam's Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has seen a significant increase, growing by more than 50% to nearly 11,000, according to a recent survey.

The recent Asian Water Bird Census recorded a total of 10,933 water birds from 56 different species. In 2024, the number was 7,225, showing a remarkable surge in the bird population.

The Tamuliduva wetland, the largest wetland in the sanctuary, plays a major role in supporting the sanctuary's biodiversity. The census, conducted on January 18, involved 12 teams of about 22 experts, including ornithologist Anuwaruddin Choudhary and Forest Department staff, who surveyed nine water bodies in the sanctuary. Of the total birds counted, 80% were migratory species, while 20% were resident birds.

The census report was released on World Wetland Day, which was celebrated at Pobitora with the theme 'Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,' in collaboration with wildlife NGO Aaranyak.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Morigaon district about 35 km from Guwahati, was established in 1998. It spans 38.81 sq km and is known for having the highest density of one-horned rhinoceroses in the world.

The sanctuary also hosts a wide variety of wildlife, including 107 rhinoceroses, leopards, wild boars, and various bird species. During the 2023-24 tourist season, over 51,000 visitors, including 2,029 foreigners, visited the sanctuary to enjoy jeep and elephant safaris.
