DIBRUGARH: Rudrani Baruah, a talented and accomplished young woman from Assam, made the state proud by graduating from the Royal College of Music (RCM), London, ranked the world’s number one music conservatoire by the QS World University Rankings.
Rudrani is among the few Indians to get the opportunity to study at this prestigious institution. She achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the second Indian and the first Assamese to graduate from the Master of Science in Performance Science programme. This unique, research-driven course is run in collaboration with Imperial College London, exploring the intersection of art and science in education and professional practice. The core areas include performer health and well-being, performance psychology, and the role of arts in healthcare.
Rudrani began her training in Indian classical vocal music at the age of 13 under Vidushi Puloma Das Joshi in Jodhpur. She later became a certified music therapist, completing a Diploma in Sur Sanjeevan Music Therapy under Dr. Pandit Shashank Katti in Mumbai. She has since worked with individuals dealing with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, insomnia, arthritis, asthma, and depression and conducts workshops on stress management.
Her dissertation project in RCM investigated the effect of music on the sensory perceptual system of older adults, specifically on taste and smell, as older adults go through a natural decline in sensory perception after the age of 60.
Before her academic journey in music therapy and performance science, Rudrani earned her bachelor’s degree from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong, reflecting her multidisciplinary strengths and creative foundation.
