GUWAHATI: The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) officially postponed the remaining Higher Secondary (HS) First Year Examinations of 2025 because of the forthcoming Panchayat elections.

In a statement issued on Friday, the board mentioned the widespread engagement of school teachers in election activities—varying from training to polling and counting as the main reason for the decision. The Panchayat electoral process will run until May 20, 2025, and it would be logistically impossible to conduct the remaining exams on time.

Following the State Election Commission's release of the schedule for Panchayat elections, teachers across Assam will be busy with multiple tasks integral to the polling process. Accordingly, holding the pending exams would be inadvisable," the board informed.

ASSEB also elucidated that delaying the exams until after the polls would create enormous academic disruption. In order to preserve the academic calendar's integrity, the board has decided to cancel the rest of the papers altogether.

Even after the cancellation, ASSEB assured the students that those who had sat for the March 2025 HS First Year exams will be permitted to sit for the HS Final Examinations in 2026 on regular board rules.

The notification comes after the Assam State Election Commission published the Panchayat election schedule earlier this week.
