GUWAHATI: A typical day at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) was dramatically altered on Friday when an argument between two female staff members turned into a physical fight in the hospital's central pharmacy.
The altercation disrupted normal operations and attracted considerable attention from patients and staff.
Sources say the incident involved Ritumoni Das, a staff nurse, and Nandita Sharma, a contractual fourth-grade employee. The fight started as an argument but quickly turned violent, with Das allegedly getting a broken hand after she was attacked.
The fight sent panic among the people present in the pharmacy and the surrounding areas of the hospital.
After the incident, both groups filed independent First Information Reports (FIRs) at the Bhangagarh Police Station, each blaming the other for starting the fight. Although the exact cause of the feud is unknown, witnesses indicated that there had been some tension between the two for a while.
Police authorities have confirmed that the investigation has commenced to determine the order of events that culminated in the violent confrontation. Accounts from eyewitnesses and CCTV records on the hospital campus are likely to play an important role in the inquiry.
The case has caused worry about workplace behavior and safety protocols in one of Assam's most active medical facilities. There has been no official word yet from hospital officials, but disciplinary action and preventative measures are being discussed within the hospital administration.
