BISWANATH CHARIALI: The road construction company, engaged in the four-laning of the National Highway 15 under the supervision of National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL), has been excavating the historical sites of the Ahom period at Biswanath Chariali in the name of the construction of the highway. The Pratapgarh branch of Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) submitted a memorandum on Tuesday to the District Commissioner of Biswanath alleging this.

According to the allegations, the construction company has excavated soil at different places near Pertabghur Tea Estate causing severe damages to the historical Pratapgarh rampart built by the Ahom King Pratap Singha. It has also been alleged that the road construction company is trying to dig large ditches and canals here and there. A week ago, an e-rickshaw along with passengers fell into such a large ditch by the highway and the passengers were seriously injured. Cattle have also died, it was alleged in the memorandum. Although the local people appreciated the construction work, the damage being done is not acceptable, they said.

The student body demanded that the entire matter should be investigated and appropriate action taken soon.
