TEZPUR: An awareness-cum-sensitization programme on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 among district officials was held at the conference hall of the DC's office, Sonitpur recently which was organized by the office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Assam in collaboration with Sonitpur district administration and in association with the Global Health Immunization and Population Control Organization.
Commissioner, Disabilities, Assam, Debeshwar Bora gave a detailed overview of the Right to Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and the 21 types of disabilities it covers for the knowledge of all attendees. He also highlighted the duties and responsibilities of all government departments with regards to accessibility, access to information and communication technology, consumer goods, mandatory observance of accessibility norms. Along with this he also highlighted the duties of the educational institutions, skill development and employment and also spoke on the special provisions for PwDs under the RPwD Act, 2016 along with special schemes and development programmes available.
Rajeev Bhardwaj of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, spoke on the rights of PwDs to equality, a life with dignity and respect and also on the offences and penalties under various provisions of the RPwD Act.
i/c DC Romy Baruah, CEO, Zilla Parishad, Diganta Baishya, Additional SP, Madhurima Das, ADCs, Banti Talukdar, Dyotiva Bora heads of various departments and other staff of the DC's office were present in meeting.
