TEZPUR: A one-day awareness programme with stakeholders of Sontipur district on rights and privileges of transgender community in Assam was held at the conference hall of the O/O Chief Executive Officer, Sonitpur Zilla Parishad in the presence of Dolly Surin, president of Zila Parishad, Karabi Saikia Karan, CEO Zila Parishad, Assistant Commissioner, Kabita Phanshu, DIPRO Sonitpur, Neena Baruah, Representative from SP, DSWO, Joint Director of Health, DIPRO Sonitpur, Panel lawyer DLSA, Inspector of Schools, DCPU, CDPOs, DPM ASRLM, transgender community, Representative from Xobdo NGO, Parivartan NGO, Poshan staff, PMMVY and DHEW.

The event was organized by the Directorate of Social Justice and Empowerment in collaboration with the District Social Welfare Office. It aims to educate the wider community about transgender and gender non-conforming people. Alongside the issues associated with their transition and identity.

Dr. Samhita Barooah, Associate Professor, Dept of Social Work, Tezpur University, Dr. Nilesh Mohite, Psychiatrist, Parivartan Trust, Arpana Choudhary, Co- Founder, Xobdo NGO were present as the resource persons on the occasion.

Discussions were held on the concepts of transgender and transgender community of Assam, stigma and harassment faced by them, mental health and emotional well being of transgender people, Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act ,2019 and Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules 2020, Assam State Policy for Transgenders 2020.

During the second half, discussion on issues related to transgender livelihood and solutions to their economic crisis was also held. During the open session, persons from the transgender community shared their personal experiences and social stigma they face in their daily lives.
