Awareness programme on elimination of violence against women held in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: The Legal Literacy Club (LLC) of the Panigaon OPD College, a leading academic institution of Lakhimpur district, organized an awareness programme at Dakhin Telahi High School in connection with the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women observed on November 25.

The programme was organized in association with the District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Lakhimpur and Telahi Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) under the management of LLC Coordinator Dr BD Nisha. Dakhin Telahi High School headmaster Babul Hazarika chaired the programme which was inaugurated by OPD College Principal Dr Suresh Kumar Dutta. In his lecture, Dr Dutta said, "One third of women of the globe has still to face with violence under various circumstances due to lack of high mentality in a section of people. So, such awareness programme is the need of hour to uphold the attitude of this section of people." He further explained the importance of women education, women empowerment, women's voice to eliminate the violence against women.

Attending the programme as chief speaker, Anup Khanal, the Secretary of DLSA, Lakhimpur, interpreted the Domestic Violence Act, 2005 and Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994 in this connection. Social workers Badan Kalita, Kulanath Bhorali also spoke on the occasion. On the other hand, Assistant Professor of Education Dr Runjun Hazarika delivered a lecture on importance of women education to prevent violence against women while Assistant Professor of Assamese, Dr. Rakhi Deudhai Phukan delivered lecture on SAKHI 181 One stop Centre, Swadhar Greha, Women helpline. Assistant Professor of Assamese, Bijay Lakshmi Das administered the pledge taken in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence conducted globally in connection with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
