Axam Xahitya Xabha to mark Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary in Kolkata

The Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) will hold a daylong programme in Kolkata on August 22 to mark the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna and Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika, who had earlier served as President of the Xabha, according to a press release issued by Principal Secretary Debojit Bora.

TEZPUR: The Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) will hold a daylong programme in Kolkata on August 22 to mark the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna and Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika, who had earlier served as President of the Xabha, according to a press release issued by Principal Secretary Debojit Bora. The event, to be held at Assam Bhawan in Kolkata, is being organised jointly by the AXX and its Kolkata chapter.

The programme will begin at 9 am with the hoisting of the AXX flag by Jibon Roy, President of the Kolkata chapter. This will be followed, from 2 pm, by a function presided over by Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami, President of the AXX, centred on a discussion titled 'Dr Bhupen Hazarika's Contribution to the Cultural Bridge between Assam and Bengal.'

A cultural programme paying tribute to Dr Hazarika will follow the discussion session. It will include performances by Kashmiri Kotoky Mallik, Sourav Saha, Parimal Das, and other artistes from Assam and West Bengal.

The AXX will confer the 'Dr Bhupen Hazarika Birth Centenary Memorial Honour-2026' on four Kolkata residents, Meenakshi Chaliha Bose, Rekha Chaliha Bose, Dolly Ghosh, and Tridib Chatterjee during the event. Two books will also be released on the occasion, including a compilation of Bhupendra Sangeet in Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi and Song of Confluence, a collection of Dr Hazarika's lyrics translated into English.
