GUWAHATI: Assam politician and leader of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Badaruddin Ajmal has again occupied a place among the 500 most influential Muslim persons in the world.

Based in Jordan, the Royal Islamic Studies Centre every year prepares and publishes a list of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world.

This year only two persons from India could get included in the list. Between them one is Ajmal and the other is Azim Premji, the business tycoon and the promoter of Wipro inc.

Ajmal gets placed in the list 11 consecutive times. They have been selected as influential Muslim persons for their charitable works and philanthropist.

Ajmal is also a reputed businessman in the country whose Ajmal Group of companies deal in perfume and clothes.

Ajmal was born into a Bengali Muslim family. He is the son of Haji Ajmal Ali, a rice farmer from Hojai in central Assam. In 1950, his father moved to Mumbai to try and succeed in the perfume industry using the oud plant. After the opening of the first store in the 1960s, the Ajmal perfume brand quickly grew to become a large brand in the Middle East.

The son of the founder of Ajmal Perfumes, he established the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in 2005. He is also the president of the Assam State Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. He holds master's degrees in Theology and Arabic from Darul Uloom Deoband university. He is a 3-time MP from the Dhubri constituency.

He is the Managing Trustee of Haji Abdul Majid Memorial (HAMM) Public Trust, Hojai. This trust is best known for the charitable hospital, Haji Abdul Majid Memorial Hospital and Research Centre at Hojai, Assam. He also established a hospital at Malua near Badarpur of Karimganj District. The hospital is named Badarpur Hospital.
